The biologist specializing in ecology and bird conservation Adrián Azpiroz presented his project to promote Bird Watching as an alternative tourist activity to the departmental authorities of Maldonado.

On Tuesday, January 19, a meeting was held at the Enjoy Punta del Este Resort, offered by the conservation biologist Adrián Azpirzo, for the presentation of a project that proposes to establish in the Department of Maldonado areas destined to the practice known as "Bird Watching" or "Birding", an activity that is widely disseminated throughout the world that mobilizes the tourism industry and establishes sighting sites that acquire international relevance when the place is rich in its biodiversity and infrastructure.
The biologist also stressed the potential of this activity, both from an environmental, social and economic point of view, “we are trying to attract part of that market of bird watchers to Uruguay because we have a number of advantages among some limitations that we have to address. ”He added.
For his part, Martín Laventure, General Director of Tourism of the Municipality of Maldonado, said that the idea consists of generating human and technical resources with a preparation program in different locations of the department to ensure that the tourist who may arrive in the future is attended from knowledge by qualified personnel. It is a type of tourism that moves more than 6 million people in the world interested in leaving their countries and looking for destinations that offer this proposal in the autumn and winter months. He also stated that “it fits perfectly into the policy of the Antía Mayor's administration of generating complementary resources to the traditional sun and beach and that allow us to work also within the department and against high season, a very good initiative that we hope will be consolidated in the coming months and that in the course of time we can have a very good sighting offer ”.
The meeting was attended by the Director of the Maldonado Tourism Area Martín Laventure; the deputy director of the area, Melina Bentancur; the president of the Maldonado Departmental Board, José Luis Sánchez and representatives of the eight municipalities of the department.
